Immigration

  • I support a path to citizenship for DACA participants
  • I oppose amnesty for illegal immigration
  • I support increased funding for Border Patrol
  • I support immigration for those seeking to escape religious persecution
  • I support the use of E-verify
  • I support the dreams of anyone who seeks to immigrate through the lawful process

Immigration is one of the key issues facing legislators today. For over five hundred years, the people of foreign nations have traveled to our shores “yearning to breathe free”. They are our neighbors, co-workers, and friends. Proven, fact-filled research indicates the benefits of immigration far exceed any negative impact on the economy or state, which runs contrary to the stance of the current administration.

We can all agree the current system has its shortfalls. When elected to office, I will work with any member of Congress to address and remedy the broken components of the process. I am opposed to amnesty, but I support a path to citizenship for the nearly 800,000 undocumented migrants were approved to take part in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. We must take action quickly, as DACA-related permits (such as work and education eligibility) begin to expire in early 2018. Without a solution, we will start to see doctors, nurses, business owners and others who support our communities deported. If this should come to pass, our communities and local economies will be adversely affected.

The challenge to pass immigration reform is no easy task, yet through bi-partisan cooperation, a viable and responsible solution can be achieved for Dreamers and other migrants. I am in favor of stronger border security, but I do not support building a wall along our southern border. It’s an enormous expense for something that’s easily overcome with ladders and ropes. It makes more sense to spend the proposed $18 billion dollars on improving the nation’s ailing infrastructure along with roads and railways that support our growing economy.
