Elysabeth Britt Issues Statement on Parkland, Florida, School Shooting

Oklahoma City, OK - Elysabeth Britt, Candidate for U.S. House of Representatives (OK-5)

I am completely heartbroken by the tragic and senseless acts of violence that took the lives of 17 Americans today in Parkland, Florida.

Tonight, the media will debate and broadcast images from this afternoon, but that will do little to comfort the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, family, and friends who are grieving the loss of their cherished.

People are looking for answers. We want to know why this happened and how this can be prevented from happening again. When we look back at the all-to-frequent school shootings these days, we realize there’s no simple solution and grief turns to anger. Something must be done.

To those who have lost loved ones and classmates, I am so very, very sorry you are going through this pain. I can’t even imagine the level of sorrow, anxiety, frustration, and sense of loss you must be experiencing. As a parent and American neighbor, my heart aches for you and with you.

To those first responders, doctors, school staff, public servants, and counselors, thank you for putting yourselves out there and being part of healing for your community. I know you’re stressed and are struggling to understand how this could happen in your town, but know you are helping. You’re where you need to be now. You’re making a difference.

As for the rest of us, we should be patient. There’s a lot we don’t yet know. We must trust in those working to bring order to the chaos. In time, we will have an opportunity to discuss what has happened and what can be done to reduce the likelihood of this ever happening again. For now, we should focus our thoughts on the families and responders who need our strength to make it through the coming days, weeks and months. Together we are strong.

Your friend and neighbor,

Elysabeth Britt
